The District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) is proud to bring Catch the Reading Bug and Metamorphosis @your library to your community.  Contact your neighborhood library to find a summer reading program near you.

Catch the Reading Bug (Ages 0 to 14)
 
Dr. David Adamski - “Of Books and Bugs”
Adamski, an entomologist with the Smithsonian Institution, will mesmerize audiences with live insects and facts about the field of entomology. Be prepared for a hands-on learning experience with racing “hissing cockroaches” and other creepy crawlies. Ages 7 and up.
 
Rukiya Bonner – “Magic Mama
Magic Mama’s electrifying tricks will captivate children of all ages.  Smiles are guaranteed at this humorous and magical performance. Ages 3-10.
 
Daniel Barash - “The Shadow Puppet”
Using the Asian art of shadow puppetry, The Shadow Puppet Workshop offers a chance to participate in an interactive storytelling performance.  Children will get a behind the scenes look at the process of the art as folktales are brought to life upon a lit screen.  Ages 4-10. 
 
Alfredo Bess, “Fast Freddy the Clown”
Reinforce your child’s learning with the antics of Fast Freddy the Clown. His comedic magic presentation has audiences enthralled with his artistic talents and skills. This extraordinary performance is great entertainment for all ages.
 
Baba Jamal Koram - “The Story Man”
Using the tradition of oral histories in combination with music, books, and visuals, Baba Jamal Koram promotes African-American culture in a captivating performance. Participants will learn about the accomplishments of various cultures while enjoying a positive and wholesome storytelling experience. Ages 7 and up.
 
Good Life Theatre presents…
Joe Pipik’s Backpack Puppets & Lula’s “Going Buggy”
Joe and his hilarious band of puppets delight the audience with original comedic skits.  It will be a puppet show to be remembered.  Insect themed folktales from around the world are told using puppetry and music.  Audience participation and imaginative props ensure lots of family fun. All ages.
 
Derick Riley - “Mr. Derby’s Jam Session”
Derek Riley better known as “Mr. Derby,” provides an interactive and engaging song and dance experience for all in attendance.  Traditional and classic nursery tunes are performed live.  This jam session will enthrall children with its spirited and playful musical magic. Targeted Audience: Ages 4 to 8.
 
Mike Rose - “Magic, Wit & Bugs”
Mike Rose’s performance “Magic, Wit & Bugs” combines interactive comedy, amazing magic, and library books to get children excited about summer reading.  All ages will enjoy the experience of this zany bug and insect themed program.
 
 Jon Spelman - “Storytelling at its Best”
Audiences will be fascinated by lively stories and tales focusing upon school, family, pets and other animals, journeys, scrapes and bruises, and things that go bump in the night.  Ages 5-12 and families.
 
Mark Spiegel –“Storyteller Extraordinaire”
Join Mark Spiegel on a wondrous adventure told in verse, prose, and song.  Young listeners will be inspired as they interact by helping to tell original stories.  Ages 6 and up.
 
Carl “Quick Draw” Tucker – Summer Reading Art Instructor
Children, ages 7 to 12, will learn basic drawing techniques within this workshop that examines shape, line, contour and perspective.  Participants will learn to draw “buggy” from this thorough instruction.  Group size is limited to 12 participants, registration is required.   Ages 9 -12.
 
Summer Programming Series:
 
“Are you a Shutterbug?”
Children, ages 7- 12, will be creative with a digital camera and capture their “buggy” projects in this 2 part workshop. Group size is limited to 12 participants, registration is required. 
 
“Catch the Reading Bug” and “Buggy Saturdays”
Investigate the wonders of insects through bi-weekly and monthly thematic programs which will explore a backyard safari, glance at a bug’s life, observe creepy crawly critters, hear the flutter, buzz, and zoom of insects, and lasso the good, the bad, and the (b)ugly.
 
 
 
Metamorphosis @YourLibrary (Ages 12 – 19)  
 
Diane Macklin – “Keepin’ It Real”
Participants will explore their own identity and community through personal storytelling and poetry.  Diane Macklin will share stories/history of Washington DC through personal narratives, poetry, and music.  Working in small groups and as an audience, students will share stories about what it means to live in DC and be a teenager. 
Jali – D, “The Drum Talker” 
David Foreman is a percussionist and performance poet that combines the education of rap with African style drums. The creator of “Rappercussion” will inspire, delight and entertain his audience of all ages.
 
Joe Romano …Experience the Magic
This exciting magician will demonstrate the techniques in the art of illusion.
 
Maryland Science Center 
Be thrilled by chemical reactions that fizz, foam, flash, change colors, heat up, cool down and learn the shocking truth about the true nature of insulators, conductors, direct current and alternating current.
 
Omekongo Dibinga - Spoken Word Poet, Educator and Motivational Speaker
Artist Omekongo leads his audience on a path in which his voice and words opens eyes and minds to a greater awareness of our global culture and world.  This talented artist renders thought provoking images to enlighten the spirit.
 
Tariiq Omari Walton, Author Visit
Young adults can meet this local author and discuss the creative processes of writing and expressions.  Learn how characters and stories are developed and unfolded.
 
DCPL Teen Scene - Summer Programming Series:
“All That Drama"
Teens will experience drama through books, movies and self-expression.
 
“Are You Being Played?”
An interactive exchange with electronic gaming and board games–self paced and tournament style.
 
“Ch-Ch-Changes” and “So-So Def Saturdays”
Bi-monthly and monthly thematic programs in which teens can explore the changes in self, family and community.
 
A series of special programs and workshops will be offered to transform your future with professional development programs, fun activities and informative workshops.  Participate in makeovers, mock-interviews; resume workshops and career guidance workshops.  Special events include visits by the MPD Forensic Science Division’s Mobile Unit and presentations by community business leaders. 
 Program line up:
Anime Night
Encounter metamorphosis in anime.  Watch anime movies and shows, check out anime graphic novels, and talk about your favorite anime themes and characters.

Cosmetology
Make yourself over using fashion books, make-up guides, and free demonstrations by professional stylists and cosmetologists.  Compete for a winning fashion design “look”. 

 Create a Comic Book
Express yourself by creating a graphic novel.  Weekly workshops will allow young adults to create a fully illustrated comic book.

Metamorphic Movie Night
  Check out great movies and films at all DC Public libraries.

Pimp My Book Cart
Give your library some style!  Design a young adult book cart and compete with neighboring branch libraries for the best designs.  

Poetry Slam
Learn to give words power by participating in poetry-writing workshops and an end-of-summer poetry competition between neighboring library branches. 

Scavenger Hunt
Compete in a library scavenger hunt, using hidden clues to gain knowledge of your neighborhood library, find books and win prizes.
